Winter Home
It is currently 10°F with a wind chill of -3°F here in Indianapolis and as usual it doesn’t really hit me how much I hate the cold weather until the first really cold blast hits again. While I love the Indiana fall and spring weather, and usually most of the summer weather, I think it would be nice to have a “winter home” in some place like Florida or Arizona. Compared to much of the Midwest and the Northern United States, our snowfall total in Indianapolis is very mild (we don’t have “lake effect” snow and most “major” snows are under 6 inches and our yearly average is 27 inches), but the bitter cold just isn’t much fun.
The trade off is the almost magical feeling that overcomes you when the first accumulative snow of the season falls…snow is falling, everything is covered in a white blanket, you can see quite clearly at night (once the snow has stopped falling) and everything seems to be at peace in the distinct winter silence. The you can break out the extra layers and find a good hill to sled down, and when you’re done you can come home, grab a cup of hot chocolate and sit by the fireplace (if you have one).
So I guess I’ll ditch the “Snowbird” idea for now and just foot a higher electric bill to make the temperature tolerable. But I say that if it has to be this cold, let it snow so that I have something to look at other than frost.
